For me, the real and unreal, the concrete and the abstract are confused dualities. An abstraction, although abstract, is a real object and a realist painting is, seen from the appropriate distance, a beautiful mixture of material, brush-strokes and texture that makes it something akin to a plastic abstraction.

I have seen wonderful abstractions on a cement wall, on the rusty bodywork of a car in a scrap yard and on a dirty plastic bag at the end of a rainy day. I have seen beautiful shapes in marvellous abstract works, like someone who sees concrete shapes in a cloud or in Hermann Rorschach’s ink stains.

In some sense, I believe that all thought, including artistic thought, is based on what we take to be real. Everything we imagine, dream or invent has a reference in reality that is deformed to a greater or lesser extent depending on the whim of creative thought. Even those forms that appear to be more abstract and incomprehensible stem from a brain that is full of real references and memories, natural or artificial textures and shapes, of which even the artificial ones are inspired by their natural counterparts.

I think that the human creative-imaginative universe is built by absorbing real images, understood in its broadest sense. The way in which each artist transforms them into a work of art is what we call artistic language and this is, just like the human being, multiple and diverse. There in lies its grandeur.
